If you haven't read the books yet, you really should. I could see people being totally lost if they haven't read them. They tried really hard to fill in a lot of the back story, and let you know what was going on, but if I hadn't read the books, I'm not sure I'd get the whole "hunger games" thing. You can pick up The Hunger Games Kindle edition at Amazon for only $5 right now.
Jennifer Lawrence nails Katniss. I loved her performance, and can't think of a thing I would have changed. She was wonderful, had great chemistry with her cast mates, and really pulled it off.
Really the entire cast was wonderful. Stanley Tucci was fantastic, Woody Harrelson was a good Haymitch, Lenny Kravitz was a great Cinna, and Donald Sutherland as President Snow...that guy has always creeped me out just a little bit, so he really fits the part.
Overall the movie was very fast paced, and did a very good job at following the book. Naturally they couldn't include everything, and had to change some details (like where the Mocking Jay pin came from). It is one of the better movies made from a book I think. They couldn't have more of the type of action that some people wanted...you can't really show kids killing kids, especially not if you're going for PG-13. They were probably already walking a fine line as it was. However I think they really caught the spirit and overall emotion of the book. I'd say 5/5 stars!
