Naturally the movie is a little predictable, it is a fairy tale after all. I like the dark take on the movie... it shouldn't be all roses, there's a wicked witch killing, poisoning, destroying... Disney kinda glosses over that fact in their version. That wasn't the problem.
The acting was all good I thought. I liked Kristen Stewart as Snow White. She's not the traditional (again Disney) Snow White, there's no little birdies chirping to her, no merry songs as she cleans a cottage. Its a dark, cruel world. A world ruled by hate and malevolence. Kristen Stewart fits into this world. She's an armor wearing, sword wielding Snow White, and that works.
Charlize Theron continues to astound and impress. She has an amazing range as an actress, and continues to build on her repertoire. She was charming, beautiful, scary, wicked, powerful...everything that was needed. I can't think of anyone else I'd want in that part.
The rest of the cast helped carry the story along...but I didn't really see any character development anywhere. There was no growth. Over two hours of movie, and I didn't see one character grow in any meaningful way. In one scene we see The Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) stop and decide to give Snow White a dagger, and tells her how to kill someone with it. She tells him she doesn't think she could ever bring herself to do that...but in the end, she doesn't hesitate. And there's nothing in between to show that she's come to the realization that she's going to have to kill someone...maybe even several someones, to save the kingdom.
One scene she's asking for advice on how to lead men, then whole "poisoned apple" event takes place, she comes to, and suddenly she's rallying the kingdom.
Good movie? Yes
Great Movie? Not quite. I'd probably say something like....3/5 stars.
