I think they've really been knocking it out of the park lately with all of the superhero movies. I liked Thor, Captain America, Ironman... and the Avengers is no exception. I'm definitely giving it five stars. They've been building up to this one for a long time now, and I wasn't sure it would live up to the expectations they've set up for us. I think it was awesome though. Decent story, lots of actions, repeat of several people we've seen before. Thor and Loki, Ironman with Pepper Potts, Captain America, Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson's character we saw from Ironman 2), Agent Phil and Nick Fury... and a couple people that we haven't seen before. Of course we got our Stan Lee cameo in the movie as well!
Sure there have been a couple of Hulk movies in the last few years...but we didn't see SHIELD then, and Mark Ruffalo is now Hulk. Hawkeye we haven't seen at all until now. There are rumors that Hawkeye and Black Widow may see their own movies in the future. I was also very amused to see Cobie Smulders with a part in this movie (Robin from HIMYM...and at least twice in the movie they use the phrase "Suit up"...was that her influence?), she did a decent job, but the part was small enough I still kept thinking, "Hey, Robin's in this movie!".
As is generally the case with a superhero movie, someone or something is threatening the Earth, its to big for "normal" people to handle, and so some hero or heroes must step up to the plate. In this instance Loki (from Thor) has managed to gain assistance in using the tesseract to open a portal to our world. He then starts actively working to open the portal again from our side, to bring through an unknown army from worlds away, to destroy and subjugate mankind.
Nick Fury attempts to call in the various heroes he has tapped before to try and form up the Avengers. Initially it goes over about as well as a screen door on a submarine...but what else could you expect when you fill a room full of superhuman egocentric people. However as events transpire certain things cause the team to figure out they need to work together. Naturally our mighty cast of characters gets together an epic battle ensues, and they eventually win, saving the Earth once again. They do it with great flair though, and movie is extremely entertaining regardless of being formulaic.
I thought it was funny at our particular theater, the manager came in and tried to tell everyone to watch the credits, because there was scene at the end. Personally I always watch ALL the credits in a movie theater, but I know I'm usually sitting there alone by the time they are over. Maybe half the people in the theater cleared out and missed the first scene that took place during the credits, but after that, everyone except myself, a friend, and another guy stayed through all the rest of the credits...and wouldn't you know it, they had a second scene at the VERY END of all the credits.
If you haven't seen it, you really should! You don't have to just take my word for it though, the Avengers kicked off the summer with a record setting weekend, selling $200.3million in tickets for the opening weekend. Sales topped the previous record of $169.2 million set by “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" last year.
